Heavy Metal Toxicosis

Painted illustration of heavy metal toxicosis in a parrot

What is it?

Heavy metal toxicosis is poisoning, usually from lead or zinc. Birds swallow fragments from old paint, curtain weights, jewelry, or galvanized cage wire.

What signs should I watch for?

Signs to watch for include lethargy, weakness; vomiting or regurgitation; bloody or dark droppings; increased thirst; and neurologic signs such as seizures.

How is it diagnosed and treated?

Diagnosis is made with X-rays and blood tests. Treatment removes the metal and binds it in the body, along with supportive care.

Can it be prevented, and what's the outlook?

  • Keep birds away from heavy metals and use safe cages and toys.
  • Prompt treatment improves outcomes.
