Birds, reptiles, small mammals, and primates (monkeys) have needs that are very different from those of dogs and cats. Our exotic care team gives these pets the same full range of care, from routine wellness visits to advanced diagnostics and surgery.

What It Is and When It's Used

We care for a wide range of species, including:

  • Birds, such as parrots, cockatiels, budgies, and poultry

  • Reptiles, such as bearded dragons, snakes, tortoises, and geckos

  • Small mammals, such as rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, rats, and chinchillas

  • Primates (monkeys)

Our services include wellness exams, nutrition and habitat advice, laboratory testing, imaging, dental care, surgery, and hospital care.

Benefits for Your Pet

Many exotic pets are prey animals by nature, so they hide signs of illness until the problem is advanced. In the wild, an animal that looks weak can catch a predator's eye, so many exotic pets are wired to keep up a brave face and carry on as normal for as long as they can. By the time a rabbit or bird looks sick, it may have been unwell for some time. Regular checkups and care from a team that knows these species can catch problems sooner. Often the solution starts with simple changes to diet, lighting, temperature, or housing.

What to Expect

Before: Bring your pet in a secure, familiar carrier. If you can, bring photos of the enclosure, a list of what your pet eats, and any recent droppings.

During: We handle exotic pets gently and keep stress to a minimum. Your veterinarian will do an exam and review your pet's husbandry, meaning its diet, habitat, and daily care. Diagnostics such as blood work or X-rays may be recommended. Some patients need sedation to be examined safely.

After: We'll give you a care plan, which may include changes to the habitat or diet. If surgery or a hospital stay is needed, your pet will be kept in species-appropriate housing with suitable heat and humidity.

Important to Know

Small changes can matter a great deal in exotic pets. A bird with fluffed feathers, a rabbit that has stopped eating or passing droppings, or a reptile that has gone quiet can all need prompt care. We will see exotic emergencies 24 hours a day once we open.
